Decay

Any item which has a quality attribute is subject to Decay. Each time the item decays, it loses one level of quality (Pristine items become Good, Average items become Worn, etc.). If an item which is already of Destroyed quality decays, it will be removed from the owner's inventory and irrevocably lost.

Item qualities are:

  • Pristine - The item is of extraordinary quality. With weapons, this grants a bonus of +10% to attacks made with that weapon. With armor, this translates to a bonus of +2 to the soak value for each damage type for which the armor has a base soak value of at least 1.
  • Good - The item is of above-average quality. With weapons, this translates to an additional +5% to attacks made with the weapon. With armor, this translates to a bonus of +1 to the soak quality of the armor.
  • Average - The item provides no bonuses or penalties.
  • Worn - The item is of below-average quality. With weapons, this translates to a -5% penalty to attacks made with the weapon. With armor, this translates to a penalty of -1 to the soak quality of the armor.
  • Broken - The item is of near-unusable quality. With weapons, this translates to a -15% penalty to attacks made with the weapon. With armor, this translates to a penalty of -2 to the soak quality of the armor.
  • Destroyed - The item is damaged almost beyond usability. With weapons, this translates to a -30% penalty to attacks made with the weapon. With armor, this translates to a penalty of -3 to the soak quality of the armor.

Each time a weapon (other than Improvised Weapons) is used (even on a miss), there is a 3% chance that it will decay. If a piece of Armor is equipped, then there is a 4% chance for it to decay each time the wearer is attacked. Furthermore, each time a character dies, every item with a quality level in the character's inventory has a 20% chance to decay.

Various skills affect the rate of item decay. The skill Expert Blade Combat prevents Melee weapons from decaying on use (but not on death), while the Parry skill increases the decay rate of weapons used against the character. The Pariah skill Destructive Blow automatically causes any armor the target has equipped to decay whenever it successfully hits.

Innate Weapons and innate armor are not items, and so do not decay.
